“It was a bright, humid day – the blue sky raining sunshine
down upon us mere mortals.” Normally, a
day as beautiful as this one would have me itching to be outside- running
around and having fun. However on this beautiful
day I was unfortunately grounded. I had
just recently turned 12 and started 6th grade. I had also just recently gotten my first F on
a test. That was the reason why I was
grounded and stuck inside. My Mom was
out running errands and had carefully instructed me to stay inside and read the
section of my science book that featured the material that I had just recently
failed at testing on. Science bored me
and always had and I just could not get myself to sit down and read the
chapters again. Instead, against my
Mother’s instructions, I flipped on the TV.
It just so happened that a movie was starting, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. I had never seen a Star Wars film before but I had of course heard of the series. I reasoned with myself that since the film
was featured in space is was like I was learning about science. It was less than 30 minutes into the movie
and I was totally enamored by the film. I
was mesmerized by the characters, the dialogue, and especially the scenery- space. Little did I know when I sat down to watch
this movie that it would ignite a love of the series for me that would
transcend to a love of space and the endless possibilities that it held. From that day on I was just like Victor
Kelly from Resurrection Man, influenced and inspired by film, always subconsciously referencing and thinking
about it in everyday life.
